Le volume 1 se concentre sur le k.u.k. Armée prise dans le champ de tension créé par le dualisme de 1867 à 1914 et le développement de leurs uniformes de campagne avant 1914. Les uniformes de camp gris pour les k.k. Landwehr en 1907 et pour la commune k.u.k. L'armée et le k.u. Landwehr en 1908 et les particularités de la cavalerie, vêtue silencieusement de leurs uniformes colorés au début de la guerre, font l’objet de chapitres approfondis. Viennent ensuite des chapitres sur les uniformes gris de terrain de 1915 sous leurs diverses formes, l’économie de la guerre à une époque où les matériaux devenaient rares, les insignes de rang et les insignes d’unité.
