Dans l'empire allemand, à partir de 1871, les troupes pionnières de Bavière, de Saxe et du Wurtemberg avaient adopté une apparence uniforme dans l'armée impériale. Le Grand-Duché de Bade possède son propre bataillon de pionniers au sein de l'armée prussienne.
À la fin du XIXe siècle, les progrès de la science et de la technologie conduisent à la formation de nouvelles branches de service, appelées collectivement «troupes de trafic» dans l'empire allemand. Celles-ci comprenaient des formations ferroviaires, télégraphiques, motorisées et dirigeables, ainsi que la branche la plus récente, les troupes de l'aviation.
